The Wilderness Years
Free will offerings
by A. Wood

In Numbers 15 the first half of the chapter deals with two types of offerings. The first are free will offerings which we will look at this month and the second are offerings made according to the law, which in the will of the Lord we will look at next month. I'm not intending to go into detail on the offerings but just focus on a couple of points.

It is interesting to note that these offerings brought a sweet savour to God (verse 3). If we go over to our New Testament we find that we ourselves bring a sweet savour (2 Corinthians 2:15) when we are telling others about Christ. While in Ephesians 5v2 we are told that as we are a sweet savour we should walk in love. How are we a sweet savour? Because Christ offered Himself up for us. While in Philippians 4v18 Paul says the gifts from the Philippians, to help in his service for God, were a sweet savour.

Verse 15 reminds us that who ever we are, we all need to approach God in the same way. Whether it was an Israelite, or someone who had joined themselves to them, then the same type of offering had to be offered. Likewise today it is only through Christ that we can approach God.

In verse 19 it is the first of the dough that is offered. I wonder do we give Christ the first things in our life? When we wake up does He get the first thoughts? the first words? When we consider what to spend our money on, do we consider giving to Him first? or leave Him to last?
