ASSEMBLY YOUTH

Wilderness Years
the census
by A. Wood

As we come into Numbers 26 we read of the Lord asking Moses to take a census of the people. This is in fact the 2nd census, the first was taken back in Numbers 1 it is more interesting to see who is not mentioned than who is.

This chapter gives us a chance to look back on God's judgements throughout these wilderness years. Verses 9 and 10 remind us of judgement against those who contended with Moses and Aaron, of the earth opening up and devouring them. Also verse 61 reminds us of Nadab and Abihu who died when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD.

Verse 51 tells us that there were now numbered 601,730 actually less than back in ch. 1v46 where they numbered 603,550. Normally populations increase over a period of time, but the judgements of God had actually reduced this population. These judgements have come due to their disobedience, a lesson for us all, in the need to obey God's commands and to trust in Him to provide.

Further we see in the final few verses (63-65) not one person who was listed back in Chapter 1 was left apart from Caleb and Joshua. God has said back in Numbers 14v28-29 that all those who had grumbled against Him, would die before they got through the wilderness, and now we see God has brought this to pass. Likewise Joshua and Caleb, the two who were faithful, have been brought through unscathed. God has likewise promised to all those that have trusted in His Son for Salvation that He will bring us to Heaven.
