| Christ's parables The beam and the pearls | by A. Wood | |

The beam in thine own eye (Matthew 7v3-5)This must be one of the most well known parables if not the most well known. How easy it is to point out other people's problems. We all (myself included) seem to be experts at it. Yet when it comes to our own problems not only are we slow to realise them. But even then, we are slower still to act, preferring to tell others how to remedy their lives without worrying about our own lives first. Once we've removed the beam from our eye, we are more able to help those we seek to, as we are no longer hindered by it.
No pearls before swines (Matthew 7v6)We saw last week how we are to show forth Christ whilst on this earth. However, here I believe the Lord is telling us not to waste our time on those who flatly refuse the Gospel and blaspheme against it. One recalls the Lord telling His disciples that if a town or city rejected them they were to move on and to brush the dust of their feet as they left. If we continue labouring against those who are totally opposed to the Gospel then we are warned here that they will attack us and seek to damage us. We need to be wise in our dealings with those who oppose the Gospel.
