Leaving all he had known (v1)Last week we looked at Isaiah's call to service, here we look at the Lord calling Abram to follow Him. Abram was told to leave all behind him. The country he had grown up and lived in, his family and others he had known. Are we prepared to do this to follow our Lord? Abram wasn't told where he would go, he had to go out in faith. Is our faith strong enough to do this?God's promise of blessing (v2-v3)If we look at God's promises and put ourselves in Abram's shoes would we expect to happen what did. Too often we want God's promises now, and don't have the patience to wait for them. It would be years before Abram would have a son. Whilst on the earth Abram never saw the fulfillment of these promises, only now can he view them from above. Man wants a great name down here, but it would only be after Abram had left this earth that his name would be truely great.Abram's response (v4-v5)Now we see Abram go out in full obedience. Well actually it wasn't quite full obedience was it! For "Lot went with him" now no doubt Abram had taken over looking after Lot, after Lot's father Haran died. But Abram was told to leave his father's house behind him and one only has to look down the chapters to see how Lot would be a hinderence to Abram. Whilst it is hard to break family ties, we need to trust that the Lord knows what He is doing and there is a good reason for it.
So what can I learn from this3 points that we can take for ourselves as we seek to follow God:1. I need to be ready to leave all behind me and follow God. 2. I need to be patient when it comes to God fulfilling his promises. 3. I need to fully obey God for He knows what is best not just for me but also those I know and love.
