At the start of Numbers 27 we meet the daughters of Zelophehad. Now in previous chapters we have seen a lot of murmuring and discontent behind the scenes, and people seeking to undermine Moses. However, these ladies, have an honest problem, and take it directly but politely to Moses. An example to all the Israelites and also no doubt to us as well, that we should be polite and also that we should not murmur behind the scenes but if we have a real problem to take it to those who can do something about it. Their problem is that their father died with no sons, and so had no one to carry on his name, nor have his inheritance. Notice first that even asking for this, was showing faith that one day they would be in the land and therefore would gain an inheritance in it. When many had in past chapters doubted God's promise, these ladies did not, likewise we should not doubt the Lord's promise of His return and a place in Heaven for each one of us who has trusted in Him. We should also consider the good testimony that their father had. While yes he had sinned like any of us have, he had not gone against God as some did in the day of Korah's rebellion, thereby denying their right to an inheritance in the land. Will our sons and daughters in a coming day be able to say of us, that we were faithful to God and had not rebelled against Him? If we were to jump on to Joshua 17v3-4 we see Joshua keeps this promise and an inheritance is given. It is one thing for us to say something, but do we always carry it out when the time comes? God through Joshua here did so, and so should we. Please send any comments you have on this article to a.wood@assemblyyouth.net
