Another month, we’re now well into the month of October, this month I’d like to speak about contentment, using a passage of Scripture I may have written on before but trust this will bless all who read it, for His Glory. “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:” (Philippians 4v11) Are you content in every situation like Paul? Are you grateful for everything that happens to you? Good or Bad? Paul had the strength to withstand “all things” including both difficulty and prosperity in the material world. What was his secret to contentment? He knew that God was with him, whether he was in need or had plenty, was hungry or well fed. Paul knew that regardless of the circumstances, God would give him strength to make it through. Do you have the strength to get through the tough times on your own? Is the Lord part of your life? Does He help you? Are you content with Him?
When you have a bad day or are in a bad situation, do you thank God for small mercies and are you still content? Or because of all the bad things, you are tempted into discontent because you don’t have a lot to be thankful for? Paul took no pleasure in the pain itself, but rejoiced in the power of Christ that is revealed through him. Paul wanted for nothing more, he was happy with the Lord. If things are going well for you, do you still want more? The Lord offers you strength to be content in all things, even the bad things. I have been married for almost a year, I love my wife but contentment doesn’t come from being loved physically but spiritually too. “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” Galatians chapter 2 verse 20. When a person trusts in Christ for salvation, he spiritually participates with the Lord in His crucifixion and His victory over sin and death. The believer’s new man has the privilege of Christ living in them, strengthening them and living through Him, In both extremes, and everything in between, keep your focus on Christ. Remember the source of strength, and look for his guidance in the month ahead. If you have any questions or comments on this article, please e-mail me at s.latham@assemblyyouth.net
