Thought for the month
loving our enemies
by S. Latham

This month, I’d like to write a brief article about loving our enemies, its something I have come up against of late, and having realised how difficult it can be, I write on the subject this month.

I come across many people in my day to day life, working life who as the expression says you “love to hate”. We all come across people we don’t see eye to eye with and it can cause problems. Whether it be work colleagues, neighbours, friends or even relatives.

Matthew 5v44 reads “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you”. When it comes down to practicing this, its not as easy as reading it.

A good Christian friend of mine said this; Once in our life, for a period of time, we were enemies of Jesus, we did not know Him, but what did He do? He stretched his arms out in love, and took us in. He loved His enemies, and continues to do so, because I am sure there are so many people in this world today who don’t like Jesus, hate to hear His name, therefore Jesus has more enemies than anyone of us, but its one way traffic and He feels the opposite.

In the month ahead, when you feel anger, dislike for someone, remember these words from the book of Matthew, love them, pray for them, and do good to them. A tough one, but a definite challenge.
