Fundamental truths
Christ's eternal Sonship
by A. Wood

Last month we looked at Christ's purity, this month we shall take a look at His eternal Sonship.

Isaiah's prophecy

For the third week in a row we start by turning to Isaiah's prophecy. It is interesting to note the wording of verse 6 of chapter 9, whilst it is a child being born it is a son being given, who is giving this son? Well we only have to read the most famous verse in the Bible, John 3v16 to read that it is God's Son being given.

not just a son but THE Son

If we look throughout the New Testament, it is never a son that is spoken of, in the sense of one of many sons, but it is always in the definite article. It is always the Son of God. Christ was not one of many sons but "His only begotten Son". See John 1v49, John 3v16, John 5v26, 1 John 4v14 among other verses. Whilst by God's grace we have become children of God and heirs of God (Romans 8v17). We are adopted children and not sons in the sense that Christ is.

Before Abraham was, I am. (John 8v54-58)

Here in John 8v58, the Lord Jesus testifies of how He existed before Abraham did, whilst the Jews took up stones to cast at Him for this, He was able to pass by. Those who try to say Christ didn't exist before His manifestation in the flesh, cannot escape this telling verse.

Hebrews 1v1-6

In verse 2 we read of how God has "spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds:" If God made the worlds by Christ then Christ must have existed back then, He could not, perish the thought, only come into existence when He was manifest in the flesh. Some would use the quote in verse 5 above, of Psalm 2v7 to say Christ was not eternally the Son of the Father but fail to recognise that this day is not 24 hours but a day that covers creation in verse 2, Christ's resurrection in Acts 13v33 among others. Many times in Scripture, a day does not represent 24 hours but a period of time. We have to remember God knows all that will happen, and could have said this before creation even happened. We will never fully understand the Godhead while we are here on earth, for our finate minds can not cope, we have to believe by faith what God's word tells us.
