The role of God in the Bible
Ecclesiastes
by S. Latham

It doesn't seem two minutes ago since I wrote an article on the book of Genesis! This month I would like to take a look into Ecclesiastes. Its interesting to notice that the key word in this book is vanity, the futile emptiness of trying to be happy apart from God. How many Christians are there out there who will say it is good to be a part of God's family? I would imagine all true Christians will say so, but then on the other side of the coin most non-Christians will say that they are happy about being outside God's family. I know for certain which one I would prefer to be on! We see in chapter 1 verse 1 the words of the Preacher, taken to be Soloman, a wise, rich and influential king, looks at life under the sun in verse 9,and from the human point of view, declares it to be empty.

Power, popularity, prestige, pleasure-nothing can fill the God-shaped void in man's life but God Himself! I wonder if that's your view too? When we see things from Gods perspective, life takes on meaning and purpose, causing Soloman to say: "Eat...drink....rejoice...do good...live joyfully....fear God...keep His commandments!

Skepticism and despair melt away when life is viewed as something far more than empty, but that of a daily gift from God. I wonder if we realise on a daily basis that our life is given by God? We see God here as our purpose, but is He? I wonder sometimes from a personal point of view, and wonder whether you can challenge yourself? Is Your life a daily gift from God? Do we live like it is? This is something that God gives us, but do we live like it? God is amazing, very gracious, and the giver of life to each and everyone that love Him. Maybe I can leave you to challenge yourself over the next few weeks.
