Thought for the month
Eternity and Heaven
by S. Latham

I wonder what your thoughts are on the titled subjects? Are you afraid of it? Looking forward to it? I imagine if I were to stand in a local high street and ask those who pass by what their thoughts were, I’d get a mixed reaction. I guess I’d get things like “I’m not worrying about it until it happens”; “I’m enjoying life thanks”; “It doesn’t exist so I’m not bothered”.

So what can we know about Heaven and Eternity as Christians? Well the well known passage in the gospel of John (chapter 14)> proves it exists and we are going there if we know Him. The fact that Jesus is speaking about it proves that it exists, He speaks about it in real terms, “In my Father’s house are many mansions” in verse 2. “I go to prepare a place for you”> it goes on in verse 2. So not only is Jesus telling us about Heaven, He is saying that He’s getting ready for us to be there….isn’t this a wonderful promise??

Jesus then goes on to say in verse 3 “and if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there you may be also” So here we see not only is Jesus making preparations for our arrival in Heaven, He promises that He is coming again so that we may be with Him. Amazed? Encouraged?

So what about Eternity? Does it seem a scary thought that one day we’re going to leave this earth, and go somewhere far better, but not only that, we’re going to be in Heaven forever. I have a clear memory of many years ago, as a child keeping myself awake at the thought of being in Heaven forever, it seemed daunting. I can also remember, that same night, the Lord settling me down to the thoughts that Jesus is going to be there and according to the book of Revelation, there will be no more suffering, crying, pain, or any bad thing.

There is no need to be scared of Heaven or Eternity, Jesus is making preparations for us, and there we can worship Him for all He has accomplished for us. Praise Him in the months ahead, and remember, there’s nothing scary or worrying about Heaven and Eternity.
