The role of God in the Bible
Micah
by S. Latham

This month we move into the book of Micah and as the months fly by, I cannot comprehend the fact we’re half way through 2007 already!!

The word God is mention only 13 times, and as most of the other Minor Prophets, these mentions of God do not always refer to God but to god – not referring to the Lord Jesus.

Firstly, I would like to refer to the words of the commentator Matthew Henry in regards to verse 4. “Neither men of high degree, as the mountains, nor men of low degree, as the valleys, can secure themselves or the land from the judgments of God.” This is a very good point as there are many people in the world today that think they re “too good” or “not good enough” for God – how wrong are they? We are seeing God as a judge to the nation – no one excluded – everyone included.

We see in this book, it refers to the sins of Israel but I believe we can put ourselves in this seat – not in particular the ‘wrongs they had done’ but put in that place, our sin because however we look at it, God is still going to judge us – on our merits and sin.

I’d like to show you Micah chapter 3 verse 7 – “So the seers shall be ashamed, And the diviners abashed; Indeed they shall all cover their lips; For there is no answer from God.”
> A sobering thought? Is there anything you wouldn’t want God to see in your life? Something you’re hiding right now? A challenge to everyone – me included.

Micah chapter 4 verse 5 reads “For all people walk each in the name of his god, But we will walk in the name of the LORD our God Forever and ever.” Here we see people being set apart from others who wish to worship other gods, and in today's day and age, this can be anything from some pop star, footballer to a hobby. We must, as Christians, set ourselves apart from those, not saying exclude them, but be different in a way that would please God – worshipping Him.

In conclusion, we see God as a judge, but also as someone we can turn to – Micah 6v8 “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”
Micah chapter 7 verse 7 reads “Therefore I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; My God will hear me.” I will leave you with those verses, and add that God is a judge of us all, but as the verses read, do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with God, and wait on Him.
