Spending time in the Scriptures
Song of Solomon
by A. Kimber

The Song of Solomon is a love story and can be a tricky book to understand in context of the other books of the Bible. When you read it you quickly realise that it expresses true love and it can be taken both as a straight expression of love between a husband and wife and also applied to the bride of Christ, the Church.

At times, reading this book is like reading someone’s intimate love letters; at others it’s like speaking to a best friend about someone they dearly love. This book is characterised by its imagery as both parties are described.

As we read, we discover the love between these two people, the respect and love they share for one another and their willingness to tell others of this love. One is black and comely, the other is white and ruddy yet this love crosses any such boundaries.

As I have said many wonderful applications have been made from this book to the Christian Church and Christ; you have only to look at many of the hymns we sing, particularly on a Sunday morning to see imagery from this book applied. Unfortunately it is outside the scope of this article to go into depth on this subject but as you read this book reflect on the love that Christ had for the Church, His overwhelming desire to purchase it to Himself at great price and realise how much love we should return.

At only eight chapters it is simple to read this book in a few minutes, enjoy it for it’s simple message, but if you have time seek to study it further and draw some of the many parallels to New Testament truth.

Key Verses

I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
