Long Words
redemption
by A. Wood

This month's long word is redemption. Redemption is the act of being redeemed. Every Christian has been redeemed but do we know what it means?

To redeem something is to buy it back. For example in Leviticus 25v29 we read:
"If a man sells a dwelling house in a walled city, he may redeem it within a year of its sale. For a full year he shall have the right of redemption.
That is if a man sold his dwelling house and wanted to buy it back he had the right to but only for a year. So for something to be redeemed by someone, it has to have belonged to that someone at some point and it has to have a price.

How does that apply to us as Christians? Well, turn with me to 1 Peter 1 v18-19
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

When man was first created we belonged to God. However, then Adam and Eve sinned and we were from then on in bondage to sin. However, the amazing thing is that there on the cross of Calvary, Christ died that we might be redeemded. All the silver and gold in the world could not buy us back only the blood of Jesus. His precious blood was shed that you might be set free from sin. Can I ask you have you accepted His offer of Salvation?

And if so are you living for Christ, I leave you with two verses to meditate on, they are found in 1 Corinthians 6v19-20:
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
