Gifts
helps
by A. Wood

This month we shall take a look at the gift of helps mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12v28

Romans 16v9: "Salute Urbane, our helper in Christ ..."
Romans 16v3-4: "Greet Priscila and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.
1 Corinthians 12v28: "... then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues"

You will struggle to find any Scriptures about this gift apart from the 3 I have listed. In some ways it is fitting that this is the gift we read least about, as the ones who have these gift get on and exercise it behind the scenes out of site. However, just because it is used behind the scenes doesn't make it any less important.

For if the help given behind the scenes were not given then that which is seen would be vastly diminished. If there was not someone to provide tea to a preacher or minister who has travelled a distance to a meeting would they be able to speak so effectively? If there were not someone to put them up over night would they be so refreshed? These are just two examples of this gift in action. Whilst we all should be ready to help each other, some have a special gift in this regard to be able to give help just when it is required.

This help is not just practical but Spiritual too. There are those brothers and sisters, who are able to give a word in season to someone helping that person in their walk with God. Lifting us up in our service for God. How we need people with this gift ready to exercise it, to lift us up when we are down, to guide us when we are lacking in guidance, to humble us when we have lifted ourselves up in pride.

Paul makes special mention of three people in his letter to the Romans showing us how important these three people were in helping Him. We need people, who have this gift to exercise it, and those of us who don't have it, to pray for those who do that they may not neglect it. That they may not be disheartened by the lack of man's praise and take heart from knowing that their God appreciates their work more than man ever can.
