redeeming the time
by A. Wood

"Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5v16)

Some of you reading this article will know the Palfreyman family. For those who don't, they have 4 sons. Their second son Andrew, was called home in June 1997, suddenly at the age of 16. On Saturday the 2nd February, their first son Daniel was called home suddenly. We can rejoice that both of these young men are now at Home with their Saviour in Heaven, and I'm sure you would join me in praying for their family as they no doubt miss both of these two sons.

But I want to challenge both you and me, here and now. What are we doing with our time here on Earth. Paul here reminds the Ephesians of the need to redeem the time, that is to make use for it for God's glory. It is easy when we are young to sit back and think well I don't need to worry about doing anything while I am young, I can worry about serving God later on in my life. What if that later on never comes? Both Andrew and Daniel sought to serve the Lord while they were here on this earth and I would encourage you to do the same.

But how can I serve the Lord, you may be asking. Well Paul goes on in the next verse to remind us "Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is." How can we understand what God's will is for our lives? By praying and reading His Word, and also spending time with fellow Christians, who may just suggest something we could do for the Lord. Going on to verses 19-20 we are reminding of the importance of praising God and giving thanks for all things. These are things that all of us can do for God even today.
