The book of Habakkuk is dominated by his prayers and God’s replies, once again we see the way that God works reminding us that God’s ways are not our ways, neither are His thoughts our thoughts. Let’s read on… Habakkuk looks at the situation around him and sees the wickedness of Judah, his concern is shown in the prayers he offers to his Lord. As he looks around he sees the iniquity, the strife and violence and prays to the Lord that justice may be restored. The Lord's reply takes him by surprise, justice won’t be brought by righteous men but by the bitter Chaldeans who are described as terrible and dreadful who come with violence. Habakkuk is told that this will happen although not immediately and that he should be ready, making the Lord's judgements plain that others may flee too. Yet again we see that the Lord is acting so that the earth may be filled with the knowledge of the glory of God. Mankind had been relying on images and idols, yet these were soon to be brought to nothing and the Lord pronounces woe to those who say to the wood, ‘awake’, expecting their idols to act. So Habakkuk prays expressing his faith in God, despite the circumstances around he knows that the Lord will be with him and will bless. In this book again we are shown the state that Gods people can find themselves in if they do not walk closely with Him. We are also shown that God can use others around to teach us lessons or bring us back to Him. Yet we learn, as Habakkuk did that the Lord is in control and that we can trust Him. Key Verses Habakkuk 1:5 Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you. Habakkuk 2:4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith. Habakkuk 2:14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. Habakkuk 3:18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.
