Christ's parables The salt and the light | by A. Wood | ||||||||

The salt of the earth (Matthew 5v13)Why are we likened to the salt of the earth? Well what does salt do? In the days of our Lord it was used a perservative. It prevents corruption, likewise we should standfast against corruption and not be involved in this world's corrupt ways. It can also be used to flavour our food, and before God the world should appear a little better because we are there, cleansed by the blood of His Son. However, if the salt were to lose its flavour then it is of no use. Likewise we are of no use to God if we are no different to the world around us.
Light of the world (Matthew 5v14-16)The world should see Christ shining out through us. Whilst we are not saved by good works, we should do them because we are saved, for James will tell us that faith without works is dead. If the world cannot see Christ's love in us, how can we expect them to turn to Christ? A lighthouse is used to guide ships in the night away from the rocks (which would lead to death) and safely into the harbour. Likewise we should be a light to guide people away from death and into the Heavenly harbour. We would not light a candle just to hide it away, so why do we so readily hide away from being a light for God?
