Isaiah's call Isaiah 6 | by A. Wood

Recognition of God's Holiness (v1-v4)First thing we read of in this chapter is Isaiah recognising God's holiness. This is the first step to serving our God, recognising Him for He is. He is the Holy one, the Lord of Hosts. The one whom seraphims [angelic beings], in reverential fear, dare not even to look upon.
Recognition of his own state before God (v5)Next we read of how he recognised his own state before God. He realised that he was a sinner and that he dwelt amongst sinful people and that he had no right to stand in God's presence and live. How do we view ourselves before God? Like Isaiah we to must recognise our own sinful state before we can ever serve our God.
The Need for Cleansing (v6-v7)And then we need to be cleansed. Oh I know that on that day we accepted Christ into our lives our sins were cleansed. But have we not sinned since then? Do we not need to follow the instructions of 1 John 1v8 and confess our sins before God. We cannot serve our Lord without our daily sins being cleansed.
Hearing the call of God (v8)It goes without saying that if we are to hear God's call we, like Isaiah, need to be in His presence. It is interesting to note that God didn't first give Isaiah the details, He simply asked for a willing servant. We, like Isaiah, need to be willing servants of God, willing to go wherever He wants us to go and to do what He has planned for us.
Isaiah's mission (v9-13)So what was Isaiah called to do? Go out to the ends of the earth and see millions saved? Nope he was told to go to his own people and preach God's word to them. We hear a lot of people wanting to go overseas to serve the Lord and there's nothing wrong with that, but we mustn't forget our own land that God has placed us in. Whilst it would be great to see millions saved, we have to remember God hasn't promise us that, but has simply asked us to "preach the gospel" (Mark 16v15). Note the command in this reference, to go into all the world does not exclude our own land.
So what can I learn from this6 points that we can take for ourselves as we seek to serve the Lord:1. I need to recognise God's holiness. 2. I need to recognise my state before God. 3. I need to be cleansed. 4. I need to be in God's presence to hear His call. 5. I need to be willing to do whatever God has planned for me. 6. I need not worry about results, just to preach and leave the results to Him.
