Offerings for the Feast of Weeks
by A. Wood

Coming to the end of Numbers 28 we have the offerings for the feast of weeks in verses 26 to 31. This is another of the seven feasts of Jehovah and is also known as pentecost, the day of first fruits and harvest.

Pentecost, because it came exactly 50 days after passover. First fruits and harvest because it was celebrated at the completion of the harvest. It is the feast of weeks for it came on the morrow after they had counted seven weeks. (see Leviticus 23v15).

It was a day when the Jews gave thanks for the harvest. It is good for us to remember that the food that we have, only comes because God has blessed us with it. Here God gives the Jews the opportunity to give thanks, with a burnt offering and a grain offering. Also a goat was offered to make atonement for them. Again these were to be made in addition to their regular sacrifices. We should never allow special occasions to interfere with our regular worship, instead we should do them in addition to our regular worship.

It doesn't take a genius to work out the New Testament parallel for this feast also known as pentecost, which is of course the day the Holy Spirit came. If we were to go across to Leviticus 23v15-22 we will see that this was the only feast to have leavened bread. Applying this to ourselves, it reminds us that we still do have sin in us, but have been blessed with the Holy Spirit. (of course the bread at Passover had no leaven in it, for it speaks of Christ the sinless one.)
